Fujitsu, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung and Seagate are getting together as the Hybrid Storage Alliance to promote the use of HDDs with large amounts of additional cache. They've set up a (not so snazzy) website at www.hybridstorage.org (check out the builder on the features page - when did you last see a builder using a laptop, never mind understanding what a hard disk is).
It's good news. I love the idea and have mentioned my thoughts before. I also think that onboard cache provides more options to develop the successor to RAID, although I'm still thinking how it could be done.
Sandisk also announced the device shown on the right - a solid state HDD. After 50 years, the hard disk is seeing some exciting changes.

Hi Chris,
Happy New Year. I see the new year bring s a new snazzy look to the blog ;-)
Ive also been racking my brains recently on how to replace existing RAID technologies but surprisingly as yet have'nt come up with anything. I brought it up to a panel at the recent Storage Expo in England and the big vedors seemed to see the need but didnt as yet have a solution - so if their top minds are thinking about it, theres not much chance of little old me beating them to it (although I cant speak for you) and Im not holding my breath.
We also talked about it on rupturedmonkey a while ago and nobody came up with a solution yet ;-)
Good luck to you on that though! And if you want to share any insights/break throughs with me and share the glory of the ground breaking change feel free to contact me!

Nigel, thanks for the comments; they appeared twice for some reason :-)
So, RAID or newRAID as I think I might call it; I will give it some more thought - however if I think of something I might have to patent it before I tell everyone... :-))
